In 1970, a long established and successful “Dance Club”, known as the VPI Cotillion Club, took a risk and chose to reinvent itself as a modern-day re-chartered chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha. That particular fraternity, as it turned out, was Tech’s oldest student organization, dating to 1873.The revival of Epsilon Chapter of PiKA seemed destined for Virginia Tech and for the ultimate benefit of the former Cotillion Club. Now, almost 40 years later, Brothers look back on that transition from Cotillion to PiKA as the best college experience in their lives. They shared a special Brotherhood in that new (but oldest) fraternity on campus.
Today, Epsilon Chapter continues as the leading men’s social organization on the Tech campus. It has the largest membership, and includes campus leaders, varsity and intramural athletes, scholastic achievers, Honors students, and always “gentlemen.” The chapter’s community service record is also among the best, with a tradition of raising significant funds to support the local volunteer fire department.Over its 40 years, Epsilon has won a total of 18 Smythe Awards, the National Fraternity’s highest recognition for chapters.Nine of those awards have been won consecutively by the re-chartered Epsilon chapter since 2000. Unprecedented!
Forty years is an important anniversary to mark and celebrate. It also happens to be the 10th anniversary of the chapter’s re-chartering.Epsilon chapter occupied earlier houses on Tom’s Creek Road and on North Main Street, and today is located on Oak Lane on campus in the house it first occupied in 1983.Alumni who have not had an opportunity recently to visit the current house and meet the Brotherhood are urged to come back on April 30 and May 1, 2010, and help mark this special anniversary.Various activities are planned at Top of the Stairs (aka, The Balcony), the chapter house, and concluding with a special banquet at the Hotel Roanoke.
This 40/10 Anniversary site contains details regarding the activities, hotel contact information, online registration, information about the current chapter, and a photo gallery. Make sure to check back for regular updates.
